Best dog training techniques – 4 tips to get you started

When it comes to the best dog training techniques, you will most likely be aware of some already. Great.

In this article, I’m going to be sharing 5 tips to get you started and the sooner you start the better.

Potty training – a must for your new doggy

Similar to a baby, puppies need potty training and when your puppy is in need of the relief, you need to be on the button.

As soon as your puppy wakes, take them outside onto a grassy area if you have one and they will most likely go to the toilet. Let him/her wander around for a while as they may need to do some more relieving if you get me. 🙂

When they go to the toilet, always praise them because it enforces to them, they are doing a good thing.

If your puppy spends a lot of time inside with you, remember to take them outside 1/2 hourly to let them go to the toilet if needed and once again, if they do, praise them.

While they are very young, you may want to confine them in a crate for their night sleep so they don’t go to the toilet somewhere in the house and this does happen when you have a puppy. They don’t have much bladder control or bowel control for that matter so being prepared is a good idea.

Crates come in all sorts of different sizes so depending on the breed/size of your puppy, will depend on the one you may buy.

You can also put them in a room which has a tiled, concrete, vinyl floor and this may be OK, although sometimes your pup might whimper because he/she feels isolated from you by being shut away. Trial and error should you choose to do this.

You might also consider buying a doggy door as pictured here. These are great if you want to keep your puppy in a certain room for a while.

Good luck with potty training

Walk time- how long do I walk my Dog- Puppy

All dogs and puppies like to go for a walk and as soon as you pick up their leash, they usually get very excited. I know with my 2 girls, they talk and wriggle with excitement when I mention the word, walk, as I’m sure yours will too.

When your dog is still a pup, go for short walks as puppies tire easily and if while you are out walking your puppy starts sitting down or pulling against you, he/she is probably trying to tell you, enough, I’m tired so please take this is into consideration as a tired puppy needs rest and puppies need lots of sleep.

There are all kinds of leashes, harnesses, and collars, in the marketplace and depending again on the breed/size of your dog, will depend on what you choose to buy

Treats and clickers- how and when to use them

As humans, we all love treats, some more than others and it is not different for your dog/puppy.

Some of the best dog training techniques are using choc drops for dogs, small amounts of raw minced beef, as in 1/4 teaspoon and of course clickers to train your dog/puppy to learn new skills.

Learning to come when called, learning to sit, stay, heel, down, wait are just a few of the lessons you will teach your dog and it is important to do it the right way.

When using choc drops, raw mince meat, and any other food products (treats) please do not overfeed your dog.

This is where the clicker comes in.

We will start with a basic command: Sit: Place your hand gently on the base of your dog/puppy’s spine and push, at the same time saying “Sit” and when you doggy is sitting give him/ her a treat. Do this a few times everyday giving a treat, then use your clicker along with praise. Repeat this process a few times a day until your doggy sits on command. This is when you only use your clicker and praise with a food treat every so often.

The same applies for every lesson. Your dog will be very responsive to this type of learning and as long as you don’t over do it with food treats your dog will remain healthy.

There are a lot of food treats on the market so be diligent when choosing your treats as some of them are not very good for your dog at all. Read the nutritional value and ingredients before you buy. This can be done online as well as at your local supermarket or vet.

Don’t; overdo it with your training. Small bursts are the best as your dog will learn a lot faster. Win-win I say.

Habits – good ones and bad ones

Habits are formed easily. Both good and bad habits and you really don’t want to deal with too many bad habits do you?

As I mentioned earlier best dog training techniques are used to form good habits, giving you and your dog a fabulous relationship, however if you teach your dog, or allow your dog to do the wrong thing, because maybe you think it’s cute or funny or you are not consistent with your training, you are soon going to have a really naughty dog.

For example, grabbing your shoe and running off with it- funny huh. Yes very, also very wrong.

Socks, shoes, children s toys, laundry, and more will be tempting when you don’t know any different and can real a real pain down the track.

I’ve seen dogs take car keys, never to be found again, destroy lounge sofas while everyone is out. BAD BAD.

These dogs are self taught with no boundaries, hardly any training and who is to blame for these things happening? You got it. The owners of these dogs. They didn’t learn how to train their dogs and what a price to pay.

So my best advice is this. If you haven’t got the time to train, go to puppy school or find someone who has the time to train your dog.

Enjoy your new adventure and I’ll see you soon

Family Dog Breeds – Staffordshire Bull Terrier for you

In this post, I am going to share information about the Staffordshire dog with you.
There has been good and bad press about this breed and I hope by reading this article you will get a better understanding of the Staffordshire

The “staffy” – will he be a dog breed you might choose

Choosing the right dog for you and your family if you have one can be difficult as there are a lot a family dog breeds, and there has been a lot of press when it comes to the Stafford Bull terrier, good and bad.

Staffordshire bull terriers are a medium size dog, short coated and may be considered in the pit bull type.

They are a very muscular dog, they have a wide mouth and dark round eyes with a short coat and their ears are small.

They have a scissor bite with the top incisors slightly overlapping the bottom incisors. Standing at around 39- 41 cm and weighing around 17 kg for the male and 15 for the females.

They are fearless and very tough with a very affectionate nature along with being trustworthy

I’m going to share some photos and videos of a friend of mine, Tama who is a family pet for some friends of mine and has been with them since he was a pup. He is one of the most gentle, kind, playful, intelligent dogs I have met.

He is wonderful with children and adults and loves everyone, although children are his favorite.

What makes a good “staffy”

It comes down to how they are treated by you. You need a firm, gentle approach with your new pup and he/she will learn quickly.

Absolutely no aggression with this dog. You will pay a heavy price for this as these dogs need love, boundaries, fun and kind consistent training balanced with lots of play time. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has had bad press along with a lot of other dog breeds and I feel the owner has to take 90% blame for this.

If you do what is right and you love your dog, why would you ever want to be aggressive or cruel to your dog? He/She is a family member and should be treated with the same love you give the members of your family,

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are loyal and love there owners unconditionally so it is imperative you as the owner do the same.

Yes, there will be mishaps that happen however isn’t in fact, when raising children mishaps happen and your “staffy” pup is no exception. it’s all part of the learning process.

Fun times and memories – years of wonderful moments.

Family dog breeds like the “staffy” can be the most amazing pet you will ever own and your dog will be part of your life for around 12 years and if you train them correctly you will have the best companion you could ever wish for. “Staffys” make amazing friends.

They can go with you wherever you go and because they are really social if socialized from a pup, people will be drawn to them because of there personalities. Fun, please, a walk, please, a bath!! Yes please. they love it all.

Puppy school can be a great start for you and your puppy if you feel you lack training knowledge. It will cost you a fee and it is well worth the investment to have qualified people work with you and your “staffy” to ensure good behavior is learned.

If you feel you know what you are doing, go for it. you obviously have the experience need to teach your new family member good behavior

Grooming should be regular as with all dogs and your “staffy” will love the attention

Time to decide- what color will it be

Stafford Bull Terriers are brindle, black, red, fawn, blue, white, or any mix of these colors with white.

Enjoy your new “staffy” should you decide this is the companion is for you

Grooming time – what to use

Grooming time should be fun for both you and your dog/dogs and it should be done regularly to ensure your dog has a healthy coat without knots or matting which will occur if you do not groom every day.

Your dog will be so happy and you will too as less hair is shed around the home if brushing is done daily. Odors from your dog will be pleasant if they are bathed regularly so buying the best dog grooming equipment is a must.

You can find 1000s of grooming products for dogs, lots are going to be cheap and nasty while others will be made with excellent materials and will last for a very long time if maintained properly.

Brushes, combs, clipping sets, nail clippers, shampoo, towels and so much more. You don’t need everything however you do need the basics. A decent brush and comb to suit your dog. Clippers, if your dog needs this and you know how to use them properly.

Specialized dog shampoo and nail clippers are good to have but only use the clippers if you know how to use them. You don’t want to cut the nail too short as it can cause bleeding for your dog. Some dog nails are clear but a lot of dogs have black nails, making it more difficult to see where to clip. When in doubt go to a groomer or your local vet. Yes, you will pay for this service and this is better than hurting your dog. This will cause your dog to become quite nervous whenever they see you reaching for the nail clippers.

You can buy dog grooming products from an online store, your local pet store, your vet, or your local pet groomer. The choice is yours.

Dogs and relationships – Building a healthy one

With a lot of bad press about certain breeds of dogs and how they behave, I feel it is important I share some information with you to hopefully help you build a healthy relationship with the dog.

I am going to cover a few subjects relating to dogs and relationships to give you some insight and positive encouragement in your relationship with your dog

Who is the boss- is it you or your dog?

Whether you own 1 dog or a few, you are the boss. Remember dogs come from a litter of more than 1 and they will, if they are allowed, try to take the Alpha position with you as their owner which, when building a healthy relationship is not at all ideal.

When you bring your new friend home, you will now be his/her, Mother/Father. The leader, the teacher and your new friend will love you for it.

Gentle coaching, patience, treats when a lesson is being learned are all part of building a healthy relationship with your dog.

If you adopt a dog, from a shelter or the SPCA or similar, who is fully grown, he/she may some habits that are not so good so you will need to do the same as with a new pup. Gentle teaching with lots of encouragement and praise.

Dogs and relationships take time and doing the right training, giving lots of love, having boundaries, sharing fun times, keeping them healthy, having lots of play time with appropriate toys, going for walks, going in the car on outings, socializing them with other dogs will all be beneficial in your relationship building and will lead to a bond stronger than any other bond you know of.

The old saying “Mans best friend” is so true

Why dogs behave badly

People behave badly so dogs behave badly. Simple as that.

Pretty much the same as people behave badly, children learn to behave badly.

If you are loud and aggressive with your dog, you are teaching them here OK. If you are bad-tempered towards your dog, you are teaching them how to be aggressive.

Going to a dog/puppy training school is a great idea. Here you will learn from professionals giving you the skills to train with love and patience, which in turn will create a wonderful, safe, loving relationship with your dog.

The stories we have read in the news, seen on the web, TV and in newspapers about savage dogs and what they do makes me sad because if those dogs had been raised with love, patience and gentleness perhaps they would not have turned out to be angry and aggressive. Just saying.

I have met a lot of breeds that are categorized as dangerous and these dogs I have met are beautiful animals. They are kind, amazing with children and adults. They are playful and funny. I have observed their home life and every one of these so-called” bad breeds” are wonderful pets which makes me come back to, it is how you treat your dog from the get-go that will create a relationship that is amazing between you and your dog.

Socializing your Dog- why is this important to your relationship

As with humans, socializing is important and so it is with dogs. If you only have 1 dog it is important your dog learn social skills, mixing with other dogs as well as humans will help with your relationship with your dog and most of all will help your dog.

Taking your dog out for walks with other dogs is fun and good for both of you. Having play dates with other dogs at your place and also going to other places with your dog to have play dates is a great way for your dog to learn how to play kindly with other dogs and your dog will be happy and tired from all the fun.

There are Doggy Daycares everywhere and I’m sure there will be some close to where you live. These places are gold for your dog as there are often all kinds of dogs in Day Care and this is a place your Dog will enjoy and once again learn more social skills.

Most of them are a reasonable cost and I guarantee you will get your money’s worth by taking your Doggy along to one of them.

If you work and have to leave your dog home alone for lengthy periods, they can become depressed, mischievous and do things that are not something you want to come home to. I’m not saying this happens with every dog, however, through experience and talking to a lot of people, I have heard stories that I know you as a dog owner do not want to experience.

The same people I have talked with chose Doggy Day Care and they have told me they have a different dog now. A truly happy, well-adjusted, well-behaved socially amazing dog. Worth considering.

Love and your dog

If everything you do with your dog is done with love, you will build a wonderful long happy relationship for many years to come.

Things may not always run smoothly. There will be hiccups along the way, times when your doggy will make mistakes and this is totally normal. No-one and no dog is perfect.

Love, Love, Love is the greatest gift you can give your dog and I wish you every bit of fun, laughter and a fabulous relationship with your dog.©

Take care 🙂

Durable Dog Toys -How to choose best for your Dog

There are literally 1000s of dog toys out there and choosing the most durable dog toys for your dog can be challenging.

The toys in the market place and homemade toys are made to suit all different sized dogs which is great for your pet.

I hope this post will give you a better insight on what to choose for your dog.

Homemade toys

When you get a dog, chances are you will fall in love very quickly with your new member of the family and sometimes, I know from experience we can be a little lapse when it comes to sensible toy choices. Please remember love is wonderful however you have to be sensible and thoughtful when making toys

Pay attention to the types of material you use. Plastic bottles can be dangerous and pieces can become lodged inside your dog and cause health issues.

Some people think freezing rolled up socks are good. I tend to disagree with because maybe it will teach your dog to steal socks and make them a toy which could be very costly and annoying when it comes to finding your socks in good condition.

Some homemade toys are durable however please do your research before you DIY and make sure the toys are 100% safe for your pet.

Old sneakers may be durable to play tug- o – war and fetch, however I have the same feeling about using sneakers as I do socks, so consider the consequences before doing this.

Choosing toys to buy for your dog

The fun is about to begin when you go shopping for dog and depending on the size of your dog and sometimes the breed you will find once you start looking around whether it be from a store where you live or online, you will see literally 100’s of toys that you can buy.

So before you go shopping, think about what you will be doing with your dog. Are you going to play fetch on dry land or in the water. What about a toy for your dog to play with alone.

Are you going to play with a strength toy e.g. Your dog pulls with his mouth while you hold the toy.

Is your dog going to have a bedtime cuddly toy? If you go op-shopping for these please check the stuffing.

Some soft toys are stuffed with toxic beads so please be diligent. Also, some cuddly toys at second hand store can create a real mess when they are eventually ripped open and sometimes the stuffing is not something your dog should be digesting.

Toys from specialized stores sell toys specifically for dogs and will be a lot safer for your dog.

Vet bills are expensive and poor health is no fun at all for your dog. Enjoy choosing and buying. If you search online there are some great stores to buy from and you will usually find they have information on each product so you make a good choice.

Durable dog toys are best for your dog in so many ways. They have been made for dogs, not humans and the manufacturer of dog products use the right type of materials to ensure safety for your dog.

Ask people you know with a similar size dog to yours and get ideas from them as they will most likely have gone through a few toys and will have favourite toys from the experiences they have with their dog.

Have fun and enjoy shopping time 🙂

Toys and Bedtime

When it is time for your dog to go to bed for the night, pick up all the toys and put them in a container. Your dog will get to know play time is over and now it is bed time. It is important for you to have boundaries and some kind of routine. Your dog will learn quickly with gentle teaching it will be a win- win for you both.

Puppy’s love to play every time they wake up and sometimes it is not convenient for you. You work from home and have people arriving, you are busy with children. You are feeling unwell…….. Sometimes play time is not OK and by putting the toys away, your puppy will also learn when it is OK to play and when it is not. Sometimes a playpen can help as well especially while your doggy is small.

You can also consider, if you have a well fenced property, put your dog outside with a couple of outside toys that don’t need human interaction and they will learn to play happily while you deal with whatever situation you have at the time.

If your doggy tries to pick up children s toys to claim them for him/herself, remove the toy and give him/her a toy that is correct. They will soon realize it is game over trying to do that.

If they decide their feed bowl is a toy, just place it on the bench out of reach and they will learn to understand the bowl is only for meal time.

Onward and upward – go have fun

When it is comes to shopping for toys I’m sure you will make great choices for your dog. After all your new family member is loved and you will always want the best I’m sure of it

I have 2 dogs and they have favourite toys, old toys that quietly disappear into the bin and new toys to give them a sense of adventure and fun.

Use brain toys, fun toys, toys that bring you both joy and I’m sure you will both have so much fun together and your doggy will have fun time alone.

Depending on the breed and size of your doggy will determine the type of toys you buy so have fun, do your research and take photos to create wonderful memories
